Chris Zylka in The Leftovers. This quasi-religious supernatural series airs on HBO. In 2011, 140 million people disappear from Earth without explanation. In the wake of the event, world religions fall apart and decline into nothing. Meanwhile, a number of cults spring up to try to explain the Sudden Departure. One, the Guilty Remnant emphasizes that those left behind must have harbored some horrible guilty secret that made God abandon them.
In the wake of the event, whole communities have collapsed. The loss of a large number of community leaders (reporters, politicians, religious leaders, community organizers, teachers, artists, etc.) has so disrupted life on Earth that most people seek out new relationships with complete strangers. Many people struggle with the social, ethical, and philosophical problems created by the Sudden Departure, and begin questioning the direction of their lives.
