The story opens as Thomas, a 16-year-old boy, wakes up with complete amnesia in a meadow surrounded by massive, 500-foot-high stone walls. A group of other teenage boys welcome him to "The Glade". They tell him that, every month, a new boy and supplies arrive. The boys call themselves Gladers, and have formed a rudimentary. Alby is the leader and was the first to arrive in the Glade. He says every boy eventually recalls his name, but no one ever remembers his past. Behind the walls are a vast Maze, and the boys believe that the Maze is the only way out of the Glade. During the day, a few boys -- the day's Runners -- search the Maze for an escape route, mapping it. But the Runners must return before nightfall, when the entrance to the Maze closes. No one has ever survived a night inside the Maze, as horrific creatures known as Grievers attack and sting anyone still inside. There is no cure for Griever venom.

When Thomas tries to save two boys who struggling to leave the Maze at dusk, he's caught inside. Through his quick thinking and initiative, Thomas manages to save all three of them.

The next morning, the first-ever girl arrives in the elevator. She recognizes Thomas, although he cannot remember her. She also has note which says she is the last one to be sent into the Glade. A split in the Gladers occurs, but Thomas makes an ally in Minho, the boy he saves, who shows Thomas a scale model of the Maze he has built and whispers about how the Maze's sections open and close in a particularly sequence and that an escape route may be possible....
