The death of Ferro Lad. Adventure Comics #352 (January 1967) and #353 (February 1967).
This was way before my time, but when I finally read the comic (which was in someone else's collection), it seemed such a stupid and senseless death for a guy who was so nice. A Sun-Eater had first appeared (as a glowing green humanoid) in Adventure Comics #305 (February 1963). Mon-El drove it off with his heat vision.
Ferro Lad's death was revisted in the "Future Legion" story in Adventure Comics #354 (March 1967), in which an adult Superman visits the 30th century and accidentally sees the memorials to dead Legionaires.
In the 1994 "Zero Hour: Crisis in Time!" is multi-issue, multi-title crossover storyline, the Legion's existing continuity was wiped out and Sun Eaters never existed. But the continuity was restored in the "Infinite Crisis" limited series in 2005 and 2006. However, writers decied to collapse the original Mon-El story with the "Death of Ferro Lad" story, so that Ferro Lad dies saving Mon-El (who had now been renamed Valor).
