"The Caretaker" was one of those Doctor Who episodes that wanted to be a laugh-riot, but didn't know how to get there. The villian was very deus ex machina, came out of nowhere, and its powers were wildly exaggerated. Beneath this sticky, pink fluff that is so sweet it sours in your mouth is a rather good subplot about the Doctor's uneasiness about Clara's relationship with "the soldier" Danny Pink, and Danny's angry reaction to the Doctor's paternalism, authoritarianism, and arrogance. It was enjoyable seeing Danny have the clarity of vision that Clara lacked.

The Doctor: Pass me the vibro-cutters.
Clara: They're in my pocket.
The Doctor: Come on, then, pass them to me.
Clara: In my other jacket, at home.
The Doctor: Why have you got two jackets? Is one of them faulty?

The Doctor: Clara, you look lovely today! Have you had a wash?
Clara: Why are you being nice?
The Doctor: Because it works on you.
