Dedication of the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial.

The bronze cut-outs behind the glass panels are the most effective part of this memorial. When the sun is low in the sky, as it will be in fall, winter, and spring, the shadows cast through the panel prove highly effective.

This is not what the memorial designers wanted at first. They wanted stand-alone sculpture. But the process of refining the design -- seeking the advice of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts -- proved its worth. The third revised design came up with this effect, and it is wonderful.
