Vipers are the name of the Colonial fighter on the 1978 Battlestar Galactica. Here, two Vipers fly over a desert planet. The show still used blue-screen technology, where miniatures are filmed against a blue screen. Since the blue can be taken out of the film mechanically, this allows the shot to be superimposed on something else. Here, the Vipers are blue-screened, and the planet imposed behind them.

Blue-screen technology often creates a dark "aura" or "shadow" around the objects which are blue-screened. It's readily apparent here.

Today, we know that the color green is far more effective, and the technique today is known as "green-screen".
