A great shot from the 1964-1965 action cartoon Jonny Quest. This was done during a time when most backgrounds were airbrushed.

To cut costs (e.g., animators' salaries), most animation companies moved to simplistic Art Deco backgrounds (pioneered by Associated Artists Productions). Hanna-Barbera took things a step further, and began Xeroxing backgrounds for re-use -- usually in the same scene.
